Description
***NOTE- PRINT IS MUCH SHARPER, WITH BETTER COLOR & SATURATION. WE ARE HAVING AN EBAY CAUSED ERROR: POOR SHARPNESS, COLOR, & RESOLUTION PROBLEMS. IT IS GOING TO TAKE A WHILE FOR THEM TO FIX - SORRY***This is a rare, fair quality (
its grainy, from and old 35mm Tri-X black and white film 45+ year old original negative, but a nice historical photo
)
lithographic
print from an original silver halide gelatin photograph by long time Hawaii professional surfing photographer Bill Romerhaus. It was printed on glossy paper,
cropped to fit, and mounted on a single 8x10 inch backing board
,
the black line is part of the print
and is
not
a mat board cut out
(see photo). It has caption, history, and photography information on the back of Hawaiian surfing legend Eddie Aikau at Waimea Bay 1967, North Oahu, he was out by himself but there were some 30+ foot sets.
He was considered to be one of the best big wave surfers in the world. The Eddie Aikau Memorial Big Wave contest now honors him, held only when the waves at the Bay are 40+ feet high. He was a surfing friend of the photographer, and the first lifeguard at the bay. Aikau had just used his new board and broke it in half on the third wave he caught that day, disappointed he walked down the beach (we have that photo too). Eddie, who was known as a big wave rider, also liked to surf waves at this break, Haleiwa, Laniakea, Sunset Beach, and Chun's Reef. Eddie was the 'King of Waimea' a true Hawaiian surfing legend! he was lost at sea during a Hokule'a Hawaiian ancient replica sailing canoe disaster in 1978. This photo was published in several magazines worldwide. Again,
please note: it is from an older grainy negative that was shot, hand held, with a 1
35mm
Pentax lens
when the photographer was in high school so please be aware of that. We did correct the image flaws to make it look better.
Aikau was a personal friend of the photographer and gave us permission to sell this photo before he passed away and we hope it will help preserve his memory in Hawaii surfing history.
It would make a great birthday or holiday gift for someone who likes original hand printed historic surfing images of Hawaii. They are popular reasonably priced decorations for restaurants, offices, homes, or stores where people can see them.
Our hand printed silver halide gelatin original photos, lithographs, and giclees are very popular and affordable to local people and tourists visiting Hawaii, as well as people who have never visited Hawaii.
We're proud to mention that many of our photos were used as background artwork in the new CBS television network series "Magnum P.I." & "Hawaii 5-0".

:
e-Bay's transfer process and the computer screen makes the photo look contrasty and slightly darker or lighter, depending on your monitor brightness and contrast settings. This photo is printed on glossy paper with U.V. coating and may different tonal range and brightness than you may see on your individual computer screen.
It is printed on 8x10 inch paper from the original. When it is attached to the single mat 8x10" backing board you will be able to see the backing board around the borders of the print which you can see here. It makes the print look like there is a margin at the edges of the photo,
the black line is part of the print,
and is
not
a mat board cutout.
Prints are permanently mounted to the acid free backing board using an archival photo adhesive and cannot easily be removed from the backing board without damaging the photo. An 11x14 inch frame (or larger) with a custom cut mat from a frame shop or art store is the suggested way to display this photo. If you want to use a larger frame and mat and you can't find an experienced framer who knows how to do it, contact us and we can provide information explaining how it can be done. This is recommended for best visual and artistic impact in displaying this photo, although many people are happy using a standard 8x10" frame and displaying the image as is. We want to make sure you know exactly what you are buying so we hope our thorough description of these photos will answer all your questions before you purchase.
