This is a rare, fair quality (
its grainy, from and old 35mm Tri-X black and white film 45+ year old original negative, but a nice historical photo
) glossy lithographic print from an original silver halide gelatin photograph by long time Hawaii professional surfing photographer Bill Romerhaus. It was printed on lithographic paper,
cropped to fit, and mounted on a single 8x10 inch backing board
,
the black line is part of the print
and is
not
a mat board cut out
(see photo). It has caption, history, and photography information on the back of Hawaiian surfing legend Eddie Aikau at Waimea Bay 1967, North Oahu, he was out by himself but there were some 30+ foot sets. He was considered to be one of  the best big wave surfers in the world. The Eddie Aikau Memorial Big Wave contest now honors him, held only when the waves at the Bay are 40+ feet high. He was a surfing friend of the photographer, and the first lifeguard at the bay.
Aikau had just used his new board and broke it in half on the third wave he caught that day, disappointed he walked down the beach (we have that photo too). Eddie, who was known as a big wave rider, also liked to surf  waves at this break, Haleiwa, Laniakea, Sunset Beach, and Chun's Reef.  Eddie was the 'King of Waimea'  a true Hawaiian surfing legend! he was lost at sea during a Hokule'a Hawaiian ancient replica sailing canoe disaster in 1978. This photo was published in several magazines worldwide.  Again,

Aikau was a personal friend of the photographer and gave us permission to sell this photo before he passed away and we hope it will help preserve his memory in Hawaii surfing history.

Prints are permanently mounted to the acid free backing board using an archival photo adhesive and cannot easily be removed from the backing board without damaging the photo. An 11x14 inch frame (or larger) with a custom cut mat from a frame shop or art store is the suggested way to display this photo. If you want to use a larger frame and mat and you can't find an experienced framer who knows how to do it, contact us and we can provide information explaining how it can be done. This is recommended for best visual and artistic impact in displaying this photo, although many people are happy using a standard 8x10" frame and displaying the image as is. The original black and white print was photographed, developed, and hand printed from the original negative in a darkroom on Ilford® Black and White 'Pearl' (semi-matte) surface paper by professional surfing, stock photographer, and master black and white printer Bill Romerhaus, of North Shore Photography, who has been shooting surfing, stock and scenics since 1967. He is one of a very few photographers in the world who specializes in hand printing original black & white waves and surfing. His most recent work has appeared in the  CBS/Eye productions "Hawaii 50", Disney/Dreamworks productions "Fright Night", ABC Television pilot "My Generation", Sony Pictures "Soul Surfer", CBS/Paramount Network TV series "The Cleaner" on A&E Networks, Universal Pictures "Forgetting Sarah Marshall", and Warner Brothers  "The Big Bounce", filmed on the North Shore or on Oahu, providing vintage photos of nostalgia, and surfing for background artwork. Bill has lived in Hawaii
for over 50 years. In 1965 he shot his first surfing photo and was a contributing photographer to 'Surfer', and 'Surfing' magazines, and over 30 international surfing magazines and manufacturers, as a photojournalist for over 100 publications, advertising/stock photo agencies, and corporate clients worldwide.
In 1983, he started NORTH SHORE PHOTOGRAPHY, specializing in black & white darkroom services, after attaining the status as a master black & white printer and film processor for professional clients island wide. His photos have credited him with over 200 cover shots and full page advertisements. His work has appeared in Popular Photography, Shutterbug, American Photographer, Shape, Men's Fitness, Surfing, Surfer, Honolulu, Aloha, Hawaii newspapers, Outdoor, Outside, Conde Nast Traveler, National Enquirer, CNN, Discovery & History Channels, & many others. Professional clients have included American Express, Vogue International, Analog Clothing, Hilton Hotels, Hawaiian Tropic, Hawaiian Airlines, etc. He was also a contributing photographer for over 40 years to The North Shore News, in Haleiwa.
