Description
This is a rare older fair quality shrinkwrappedlithographic
print from a
hand printed original silver halide gelatin photograph by long time Hawaii professional surfing photographer Bill Romerhaus
on double we
ight
paper,
cropped, and mounted on a single 8x10 inch backing board **included as part of the print which you can see here
(see photo), shrinkwrapped with removable sticker, with caption and photography information on the back of Hawaiian surfing legend Eddie Aikau in the front and fellow surfer Steve Gaines at Haleiwa (Alii Beach), North Oahu ©1968. FYI: Aikau previously got a similar (but much deeper) barrel and was pulling out of the wave, (we sell that photo published in Surfer Magazine at our e-Bay store too).
This was early winter when the first major surfing competitions were taking place and all the pros were all over the North Shore for the winter.
**Please note that
the original photo was shot on T
RI-X
negative film/ Be aware that this photo is unlike newer computer digital prints because the original was shot on older grainy 35mm black and white film
, it is not as sharp as the smaller image you see when when enlarged
.
It has the unique look of a silver halide gelatin photo, and is still a very nice historic print.
It would make a great birthday or holiday gift for someone who likes surfing, has surfed here, or likes vintage surfing images of Hawaii. They are popular reasonably priced decorations for restaurants, offices, homes, or stores where people can see them.
It is initialed and dated on the front of the photo, and is shrink wrapped to protect it from damage and has preservation tips included in the label on the back. This is right before short boards started showing up on the north shore. Aikau, who was known as a big wave rider, also liked to surf small to medium size waves at this break, Sunset, Laniakea, Makaha, Waimea, and Chun's Reef. Edward Ryan Aikau, who was born on Maui in 1946 was lost at sea during a ocean disaster on the Hokule'a ancient sailing canoe replica in 1978. During an extremely hazardous storm, the double hulled canoe capsized and Aikau left on a surfboard in an attempt to paddle for help, he was never seen again. He will always be remembered as a true Hawaiian surfing legend and a surfing friend of the photographer. Ironically it was the late big wave surfer Mark Foo who came up the term "Eddie Would Go" which actually referred to the fact that Eddie would go for it on the biggest waves that other surfers refused, often taking off on the other side of the bowl at Waimea on giant days! Others say it referred to the fact that he left the Hokule'a to attempt a rescue. Eddie was a friend of ours and we gave him copies and got permission to sell this photo.
Our hand printed silver halide gelatin, giclee, and lithographic original photos are very popular and affordable to local people and tourists visiting Hawaii, as well as people who have never visited Hawaii.
We're proud to mention that many of our photos were used as background artwork in the new CBS television network series "Hawaii 5-0".
Prices are less than you would pay retail at a gallery or custom photo lab for a hand printed and mounted silver halide black and white print and production costs are lower than most folks so we want to offer affordable quality.

PLEASE ALSO NOTE
:
e-Bay's transfer process and the computer screen makes the photo look contrasty and slightly darker or lighter, depending on your monitor brightness and contrast settings. This photo is printed on glossy surface paper and the photo offered has more gray tones, deep, richer blacks, less contrast which has a different tonal range and brightness than you may see on your individual computer screen. Please be aware of this. We do however try to crop and correct them so they look best. It is printed on 8x10 inch paper from a
n original
negative and margins may be slightly trimmed. **When it is attached to the single mat 8x10" backing board you will be able to see the backing board around the borders of the print. It makes the print look like there is a margin at the edges of the photo which you can see here.
Prints are permanently mounted to the acid free backing board using an archival photo adhesive and cannot easily be removed from the backing board without damaging the photo. An 11x14 inch frame (or larger) with a custom cut mat from a frame shop or art store is the suggested way to display this photo. If you want to use a larger frame and mat and you can't find an experienced framer who knows how to do it, contact us and we can provide information explaining how it can be done. This is recommended for best visual and artistic impact in displaying this photo, although many people are happy using a standard 8x10" frame and displaying the image as is. We want to make sure you know exactly what you are buying so we hope our thorough description of these photos will answer all your questions before you purchase.
