    Description

    This is an
    unmounted
    giclee
photo a 40-50 foot+ (old style) close out wave at Waimea Bay 1969 from an Ectachrome transparency in the 35mm 'full frame' format. It was printed on a 8.5 x 11" sheet of Epson pro glossy photo paper with archival ink (
**includes white margins as part of print that you can see here
    ,
see photo) by longtime Hawaii surfing photographer Bill Romerhaus in the winter of 1969. It is also initialed 'BR' 69 in the lower corner (**not seen here).
This season was the largest surf ever recorded on the north shore. No one was out. If you're familiar with Waimea, you'll notice the 'boil' and realize how big this wave really was, and this was only a smaller one of the biggest sets that day that were consistently closing out across the entire bay! There were many days of surf this size over a two month period. If tow in surfing had been used there were 10-15 giant spots offshore along the coast from Kaena Point to Sunset Beach that could have been ridden at 60-70+ feet.
Waimea Bay is one the largest surf breaks in the world. It is also home of the Eddie Aikau Memorial Big Wave Surfing contest only held when the waves are at least 25 foot high. Waimea waves are some of the most powerful on earth, generated by far distant North Pacific Ocean storms during the winter months (Sept-March). They are an incredible example of the ocean's mightiness. It has been said that one wave this size if harnessed for energy could provide enough electrical power to light a thousand homes for over an hour. Native Hawaiians, surfers, and a lot of oriental people consider these magnificent waves to be a supreme example of power and manifested with the spirit of mother nature. To actually see these waves breaking along the shoreline is an awesome, humbling, and unforgettable experience.
It is also a little grainy as it was shot on older Ecktachrome transparency film please be aware of this
, and is still a beautiful historic image.
It would make a great birthday or holiday gift for someone who likes this area or surfing images of Hawaii. They are popular reasonably priced decorations for restaurants, offices, homes, or stores where people can see them.
