This is a quality older looking original hand printed silver halide gelatin photograph custom printed by longtime Hawaii professional surfing photographer Bill Romerhaus in a darkroom from the original negative, archivally developed in chemistry on Ilford 'Pearl' semi-matte surface black & white photographic paper, cropped, and
mounted on a single 8x10 inch backing board that you can see here (see photo)

at Waimea Bay, Haleiwa, North Shore Oahu, Hawaii.
This is printed in the 'full frame' 35mm format with ragged edges and the white margin and are part of the print and not a mat board cutout.
It was taken from a 1967 Volkswagen van, and if you look carefully you can see that there were cars parked on the ocean side of the road which has since eroded and a 4 foot wall constructed a decade ago when the rockfall closed the road for several weeks. Also it was taken thru the windshield that had salt spray, so please be aware of that, but it looks good as a historic photo. It is initialed (BR) in metallic ink in the lower corner,  on the front of the photo, and is shrink wrapped to protect it from damage, and has preservation tips included in the label on the back. This image has been published in several magazines, and was on the front page of the Honolulu Advertiser newspaper in Honolulu.
Waimea Bay has one the largest surf breaks in the world. It is also home of the Eddie Aikau Memorial Big Wave Surfing contest only held when the waves are at least 40 feet high. This has always been a popular photo and
it would make a great birthday or holiday gift for someone who likes this area or historic surfing images of Hawaii. They are popular reasonably priced decorations for restaurants, offices, homes, or stores where people can see them.
This is home of some of the largest rideable waves in the world.  Native Hawaiians, surfers, and a lot of oriental people consider these magnificent waves to be a supreme example of power and manifested with the spirit of mother nature. To actually see these waves breaking along the shoreline is an awesome, humbling, and unforgettable experience.  In the near future real black and white silver halide photographic paper will cease to be available as manufacturers phase out production because of digital photography and we won't be printing these by hand in the darkroom forever.

The photos are the 'old style' traditional film based images printed using an enlarger from a negative on real photographic paper and archivally processed by hand, not by a machine. This photo is printed on non-glossy semi-matte 'pearl' surface paper and the photo offered has more gray tones, deep, richer blacks, less contrast, and has the unique look of a real silver halide gelatin print, which has a different tonal range and brightness than you may see on your individual computer screen. Please be aware of this. You may be able to see small imperfections and some spots on the wind shield  as these are printed by hand 'as is' and are not retouched. We do however try to crop and correct them so they look best.
It is printed on 8x10 inch paper from the original negative and margins may be slightly trimmed.
**When it is cropped and attached to the single mat 8x10" backing board you will be able to see the  backing board around the borders of the print which you can see here. It makes the print look like there is a  ragged margin at the edges of the photo.
Prints are permanently mounted to the acid free backing board using archival photo adhesive and cannot easily be removed from the backing board without damaging the photo. An 11x14 inch frame (or larger) with a custom cut mat from a frame shop or art store is the suggested way to display this photo. If you want to use a larger frame and mat and you can't find an experienced framer who knows how to do it, contact us and we can provide information explaining how it can be done. This is recommended for best visual and artistic impact in displaying this photo, although many people are happy using a standard 8x10" frame and displaying the image as is. This original silver halide gelatin print was photographed, developed, and hand printed from the original negative in a darkroom on Ilford® Black and White 'Pearl' (semi-matte) surface paper by professional surfing, stock photographer, and master black and white printer Bill Romerhaus, of North Shore Photography, who has been shooting surfing, stock and scenics since 1967. He is one of a very few photographers in the world who specializes in hand printing original black & white waves and surfing. His most recent work has appeared in the new CBS/Eye productions "Hawaii 50", Disney/Dreamworks productions "Fright Night", ABC Television pilot "My Generation", Sony Pictures "Soul Surfer", CBS/Paramount Network TV series "The Cleaner" on A&E Networks, Universal Pictures "Forgetting Sarah Marshall", and Warner Brothers  "The Big Bounce", filmed on the North Shore or on Oahu, providing vintage photos of nostalgia, and surfing for background artwork.
Bill has lived in Hawaii for over 50 years. In 1965 he shot his first surfing photo and was a contributing photographer to 'Surfer', and 'Surfing' magazines, and over 30 international surfing magazines and manufacturers, as a photojournalist for over 100 publications, advertising/stock photo agencies, and corporate clients worldwide. His photos have credited him with over 200 cover shots and full page advertisements.
