    Description

This is a fair quality (not super sharp) older original hand printed silver halide gelatin photograph custom printed by longtime Hawaii professional surfing photographer Bill Romerhaus in a darkroom from the original negative, archivally developed in chemistry on Ilford 'Pearl' semi-matte surface black & white photographic paper,
cropped, and mounted on a single 8x10 inch black backing board **which is part of the print that you can see here, note: left margin is a little narrower (see photo)
with caption and photography information on the back, of of sixties surfing legend Butch VanArtsdalen at Sunset
    B
    each
    ,
1968, practicing for the last Duke Kahanamoku Invitatio
    nal surfing competitions
. He was one of a few pioneers in early big wave surfing. It is initialed ('BR') and dated on the front of the photo, is shrink wrapped to protect it from damage and has preservation tips included in the label on the back.
Butch, was originally from Virginia Beach, where he was born on January 31, 1941, and moved to La Jolla California when he was 14 years old, learned to surf at WindandSea Beach, and was one of the original members of the surf club named for the break. He also moved to Hawaii in the early 1960’s where he became a surfing pioneer and legend in Hawaii (and California) with his outstanding big wave surfing performances, which also earned him the title of “Mr. Pipeline (or the King)” at the infamous Banzai Pipeline on Oahu’s north shore. He passed away on July 18, 1979 due to a health problem, and was considered as one of the best original big wave sixties surfers. He was also known for his ability to ‘switch stance’ at this and other breaks. This photo was published in several magazines worldwide.
Please be aware that this photo is unlike newer computer digital prints because the original was shot on older grainy Tri-X black and white film and printed from a negative
, and is still a very nice historic print.
It would make a great birthday or holiday gift for someone who grew up in this era, knew Butch, or likes historic images of surfing.
They are popular reasonably priced decorations for restaurants, offices, homes, or stores where people can see them.
This photo was taken when surfers were practicing for the 1968 Duke Kahanamoku Classic surf contest held at Sunset Beach, which is the home of many professional surfing competitions during the winter months including the Triple Crown of Surfing (September thru March) on the North Shore when some of the suggested, largest, and most dangerous surf pounds the area with surf generated from distant North Pacific Ocean storms. The waves here are incredibly powerful and dangerous for novice surfers. Sunset is primarily a right hand break for 'regular footers' although there is a left break thats sometimes makeable. It can be ridden as small as 2-3 foot up to about 18 feet when it begins to close out across the channel to Kammieland. To actually see these waves breaking along the shoreline is an awesome, humbling, and unforgettable experience. In the near future real black and white silver halide photographic paper will cease to be available as manufacturers phase out production because of digital photography and we won't be printing these by hand in the darkroom forever.
Our hand printed silver halide gelatin original photos are very popular and affordable to local people and tourists visiting Hawaii, as well as people who have never visited Hawaii.
We're proud to mention that many of our photos were used as background artwork in the new CBS television network series "Hawaii 5-0".
The photos are the 'old style' traditional film based images printed using an enlarger from a negative on real photographic paper and archivally processed by hand, not by a machine. Prices are less than you would pay retail at a gallery or custom photo lab for a hand printed and mounted silver halide black and white print and production costs are lower than most folks so we want to offer affordable quality art for people who might not otherwise be able to afford it.

    :
e-Bay's transfer process and the computer screen makes the photo look contrasty and slightly darker or lighter, depending on your monitor brightness and contrast settings. This photo is printed on non-glossy semi-matte 'pearl' surface paper and the photo offered has more gray tones, deep, richer blacks, less contrast, and has the unique look of a real silver halide gelatin print, which has a different tonal range and brightness than you may see on your individual computer screen. Please be aware of this. You may be able to see small imperfections on larger images as these are printed by hand 'as is' and are not retouched. We do however try to crop and correct them so they look best. It is printed on 8x10 inch paper from a
    n o
    riginal
negative and margins may be slightly trimmed. **When it is cropped and  attached to the single mat 8x10" backing board you will be able to see the backing board around the borders of the print. It makes the print look like there is a margin around the edges of the photo which you can see here.
Prints are permanently mounted to the acid free backing board using archival photo adhesive and cannot easily be removed from the backing board without damaging the photo. An 11x14 inch frame (or larger) with a custom cut mat from a frame shop or art store is the suggested way to display this photo. If you want to use a larger frame and mat and you can't find an experienced framer who knows how to do it, contact us and we can provide information explaining how it can be done. This is recommended for best visual and artistic impact in displaying this photo, although many people are happy using a standard 8x10" frame and displaying the image as is. We can also print this photo in larger sizes, please inquire
