It would make a great birthday or holiday gift for someone who likes the Duke or historic surfing images of Hawaii. They are popular reasonably priced decorations for restaurants, offices, homes, or stores where people can see them.
The ancient and very spiritual sport of surfing started in Hawaii and there are indications that it may be more than several hundred years old. There are many old stories about ancient Hawaiian royalty and commoners surfing longer than Hawaiian history records. Captain Cooke in the 1700's mentioned surfing in his logs. The original surfboards were basically heavy, flat, wooden planks, 6-16+ feet in length, 5-10 inches in thickness, that were hand carved from logs and treated with oils and varnishes to make them waterproof. They were bulky and awkward to ride compared to modern boards.
There were two kinds of surfboards in early Hawaiian times, an 'Olo' ( the longer heavy boards mostly rode by the chiefs and noblemen) and a 'Alaia' (the shorter boards rode by the commoners). In ancient times most of the better surf breaks were reserved for royalty. To be an accomplished surfer was a goal of many Alii and royalty which gained them more recognition and status in the society. Its likely that commoners who were excellent surfers were allowed to surf with royalty and gained a higher position in the society. Please note that In the future real black and white silver halide photographic paper will cease to be available as manufacturers phase out production because of digital photography.

:
e-Bay's transfer process and the computer screen makes the photo look contrasty and slightly darker or lighter, depending on your monitor brightness and contrast settings. This photo is printed on glossy surface paper.
It is printed on 8x10 inch paper and margins may be slightly trimmed. **When it is attached to the single mat 8x10" backing board you will be able to see the single black border line and the thin white the borders of the mat backing board. It makes the print look like there is a black and thin white margin around the edges of the photo which you can see here and is not a mat board cutout.
Prints are permanently mounted to the acid free backing board using an archival photo adhesive and cannot easily be removed from the backing board without damaging the photo.
An 11x14 inch frame (or larger) with a custom cut mat from a frame shop or art store is the suggested way to display this photo. If you want to use a larger frame and mat and you can't find an experienced framer who knows how to do it, contact us and we can provide information explaining how it can be done.
