    Description

***NOTE- THIS PRINT IS MUCH SHARPER, WITH BETTER COLOR & SATURATION THAN THE SAMPLE
PRINT SEEN HERE. WE ARE HAVING AN EBAY CAUSED ERROR: POOR  SHARPNESS, COLOR, &
RESOLUTION PROBLEMS WITH THE PHOTO YOU SEE HERE. WE ARE WAITING FOR EBAY TO FIX THIS***
This is the last one (printed by hand in this size - no scan lines on print))  a fair to good quality mounted 11x14 inch limited edition of Eddie Aikau at Haleiwa Alii Beach hand printed original silver halide gelatin photograph custom printed by long time Hawaii professional surfing photographer Bill Romerhaus in a darkroom from the original negative, cropped, and archivally developed in chemistry on Ilford 'Pearl' semi-matte surface black & white photographic paper and mounted on a backing board at Oahu's north shore in Haleiwa.
Please note that the print has softer contrast because of the type of photo paper.
This photo was featured in a 1968 issue of Surfer Magazine. It is signed by the photographer on the front lower corner of the photo, and is shipped by USPS Mail and has preservation tips and photo info in a separate included label on the back.
NOTE: It does not come with a black border, it is a  print that was shot for e-Bay on a black background, and has a narrow white margin at the edges (see photo) from the printing frame.
Because it was printed in a darkroom and is from a very old negative it has some **unretouched blemishes and dust marks, that you can't see here on the smaller image.
It does not look like a digital print. Please be aware of this
. This print is very rare, as we only produced 4 of this size ever printed and on double weight fiber based paper,  and
    will
never print in this format ever again. It is shipped in a flat package by USPS  Mail. This is a resellable collectors photo especially when framed item and we don't sell them cheap,  the USA shipping cost us over .00.
It would make a great gift for someone who likes historic surfing images of Hawaii. They are popular reasonably priced decorations for restaurants, offices, homes, or stores where people can see them.
Aikau, was born in 1946. On this day he was the only one out for several hours. Eddie, who was known as a big wave rider, also liked to surf small to medium size waves at this break, Waimea, Haleiwa, Laniakea, Makaha, Sunset Beach and Chun's Reef. He was lost at sea in 1978 during a ocean disaster on the Hokule'a ancient sailing canoe replica. During an extremely hazardous storm, the double hulled canoe capsized and Aikau left on a surfboard in an attempt to paddle for help, he was never seen again. He will always be remembered as a true Hawaiian surfing legend and a surfing friend of th photographer. Ironically, it was the late big wave rider Mark Foo who came up the quote "Eddie Would Go" referring to the fact that Eddie would always go for the biggest wave, when other surfers would back out. Other believe it was related to Eddie's rescue attempt for the Hokule'a. Many times at Waimea Bay he would take off on the other side of the bowl! This photo was published in several magazines worldwide. Eddie was a personal friend of the photographer and gave us permission to sell this photo before he passed away and we hope it will help preserve his memory in Hawaii surfing history. *Please note that this is from an older grainy negative and there are small dust marks on the print, but it looks OK anyway.
Our hand printed silver halide gelatin original photos are very popular and affordable to local people and tourists visiting Hawaii, as well as people who have never visited Hawaii.
We're proud to mention that many of our photos were used as background artwork in the new CBS television network series "Hawaii 5-0".
The photos are the 'old style' traditional film based images printed using an enlarger from a negative on real photographic paper and archivally processed by hand, not by a machine. Prices are less than you would pay retail at a gallery or custom photo lab for a hand printed and mounted silver halide black and white print and production costs are lower than most folks so we want to offer affordable quality art for people who might not otherwise be able to afford it.

    PLEASE ALSO NOTE
    :
e-Bay's transfer process and the computer screen makes the photo look contrasty and slightly darker or lighter, depending on your monitor brightness and contrast settings. This photo is printed on non-glossy semi-matte Ilford 'pearl' surface double weight fiber based paper. The photo offered has more gray tones, deep, richer blacks, less contrast, and has the unique look of a real silver halide gelatin print, which has a different tonal range and brightness than you may see on your individual computer screen. Please be aware of this. You may be able to see small imperfections on larger images as these are printed by hand 'as is' and are not retouched. We do however try to crop and correct them so they look best. It is printed  from th
    e original
negative with out the black background. A 16 x 20 inch frame (or larger) with a custom cut mat from a frame shop or art store is the suggested way to display this photo. This is recommended for best visual and artistic impact in displaying this photo. NOTE: The print does not include the black border, it was shot on a black background for the e-bay listing. We want to make sure you know exactly what you are buying so we hope our thorough description of these photos will answer all your questions before you purchase.
