Description
This is a rare olderquality
glossy (
with UV coating)
lithographic print from a
hand printed original photograph custom printed by long time Hawaii professional surfing photographer Bill Romerhaus in a darkroom from the original negative,
cropped, and mounted on a single 8x10 inch backing board **which is included as part of the print that you can see here
(see photo) with caption and photography information on the back of Hawaiian surfing legend Eddie Aikau at Haleiwa (Alii Beach), North Oahu ©1968. It was published in Surfer Magazine in 1968 and mistakenly captioned as Ben Aipa. It is initialed and dated on the front of the photo, and is shrink wrapped (you can see slightly) to protect it from damage and has preservation tips included in the label on the back. This photo is from an older grainy negative so please be aware of that. This is right before short boards started showing up on the north shore.
It would make a great birthday or holiday gift for someone who likes historic surfing images of Hawaii. They are popular reasonably priced decorations for restaurants, offices, homes, or stores where people can see them.
Eddie, who was known as a big wave rider, also liked to surf small to medium size waves at this break, Sunset, Laniakea, Makaha, Waimea Bay, and Chun's Reef. Edward Ryan Aikau, who was born on Maui in 1946, was lost at sea during a ocean disaster on the Hokule'a ancient sailing canoe replica in 1978. During an extremely hazardous storm, the double hulled canoe capsized and Aikau left on a surfboard in an attempt to paddle for help, he was never seen again. He will always be remembered as a true Hawaiian surfing legend and a surfing friend of the photographer. Ironically it was the late big wave surfer Mark Foo who came up the term "Eddie Would Go" which actually referred to the fact that Eddie would go for it on the biggest waves that other surfers refused, often taking off on the other side of the bowl at Waimea on giant days! other folks believe that it originated when Aikau left the Hokule'a for help. He was a personal friend of the photographer and gave us permission to sell this photo before he passed away and we hope it will help preserve his memory in Hawaii surfing history.
Our original lithographic photos silver halide, and giclees are very popular and affordable to local people and tourists visiting Hawaii, as well as people who have never visited Hawaii. We're proud to mention that many of our photos were used as background artwork in the new CBS television network series "Hawaii 5-0". The original print was the 'old style' traditional film based image printed using an enlarger from a negative on real photographic paper, and then transferred to the long lasting lithographic process. Prices are less than you would pay retail at a gallery or custom photo lab for a black and white print and production costs are lower than most folks so we want to offer affordable quality art for people who might not otherwise be able to afford it.

:
e-Bay's transfer process and the computer screen makes the photo look contrasty and slightly darker or lighter, depending on your monitor brightness and contrast settings. You may be able to see small imperfections on larger images . We do however try to crop and correct them so they look best. It is printed on 8x10 inch paper from an original and margins may be slightly trimmed. **When it is cropped and attached to the single mat 8x10 inch backing board you will be able to see the backing board around the borders of the print. It makes the print look like there is a margin around the edges of the photo which you can see here.
Prints are permanently mounted to the acid free backing board using an archival photo adhesive and cannot easily be removed from the backing board without damaging the photo. An 11x14 inch frame (or larger) with a custom cut mat from a frame shop or art store is the suggested way to display this photo. If you want to use a larger frame and mat and you can't find an experienced framer who knows how to do it, contact us and we can provide information explaining how it can be done. This is recommended for best visual and artistic impact in displaying this photo, although many people are happy using a standard 8x10" frame and displaying the image as is. We also have a few 11x14's unmounted of this print also, please inquire.
