    Description

This is a limited edition (last one ever hand printed by photographer in this size),
    unmounted
    (
with thin white border, see photo
), quality hand printed 16 x 20 inch silver halide gelatin photograph custom printed signed original, (sorry the sample photo was shot at a sight angle). This is a very historically significant museum quality photo on Ilford pearl double weight fiber based black and white photographic paper, archivally processed and washed, and signed by long time Hawaii professional photographer Bill Romerhaus, (not a digital inkjet print) of the Hokule’a (Star of Gladness: translation), ancient Hawaiian sailing canoe replica, as it enters Haleiwa Harbor during a historic trip to Haleiwa Harbor in 1997. It was published on the cover of the North Shore News, featured on the cover of our twice award winning book, "Haleiwa: A Pictorial History" available at our e-Bay store, and published in several other publications.
The Polynesian Voyaging Society canoe was made with the same materials as the original canoes of this type that were used to travel long distances along the Pacific Archipelago. This was the first modern canoe to solely use traditional Hawaiian navigation to sail to Tahiti from Hawaii and circumnavigate the globe This ancient method revival involved reading ocean swells and direction, winds, and the stars to navigate the voyages. This is probably a collectible as we will probably never print in this size and on this type of paper again.
It would make a great birthday or holiday gift for someone who likes Hawaiiana or historic images. They are popular reasonably priced decorations for restaurants, offices, homes, or stores where people can see them.
The print comes unmounted and shipping in a tube, with a separate caption sheet.
NOTE: It does not come with a black border, it is a print that was shot for e-Bay on a black background and has a small white margin from the printing easel (see photo). It will fit nicely in a 16x20" frame although we recommend a 20x30 or larger frame for suggested presentation. It is shipped FREE by USPS mail to USA only, rolled up in a double shipping tube.
    ***
Please be aware that it was shot on a 35mm original negative so will look grainier than the small photo you see here, and also has some barely noticeable minor dust marks and imperfections that were on the original negative. We did slightly retouch them.
These custom prints are time consuming and expensive to print, but our price is less than half of what this print would sell retail or much more when framed. Some people buy them add a custom frame and sell for a profit.
This original silver halide gelatin print was photographed, developed, and hand printed from the original negative in a darkroom on Ilford® Black and White 'Pearl' surface fiber based, double weight (semi-matte) surface paper by Hawaii professional surfing, stock photographer, and master black and white printer Bill Romerhaus, of North Shore Photography, who has been shooting surfing and scenics since 1967. He is one of a very few photographers in the world who specializes in hand printing original black & white waves and surfing. Properly handled and displayed these photos can last more than 100 years.
Bill has lived in Hawaii for over 50 years. In 1965 he shot his first surfing photo and was a contributing photographer to Surfer, Surfing, and other magazines for several years. In 1983, he started NORTH SHORE PHOTOGRAPHY, specializing in black & white professional darkroom services, after attaining the status as a master black & white printer and film processor for professional clients island wide. He also worked as a contributing photographer to over 30 international surfing magazines and manufacturers, and as a photojournalist for over 100 publications and agencies worldwide. His photos have credited him with over 200 cover shots and full page advertisements. His work has appeared in Popular Photography, Shutterbug, American Photographer, Shape, Men's Fitness, Surfing, Surfer, Honolulu, Aloha, Honolulu Star-Bulletin & Advertiser newspapers, Outdoor, Outside, Conde Nast Traveler, National Enquirer, Discovery & History Channels, & many others.
His professional clients have included Vogue International, Hilton Hotels, Miss Hawaiian Tropic, Aloha & Hawaiian Airlines, etc. He was also a contributing photographer for over 40 years to The North Shore News, in Haleiwa. His most recent job was for the CBS-Paramount Network TV series 'Magnum P.I" and Hawaii "The Cleaner" on A&E/CBS Networks, Universal Pictures "Forgetting Sarah Marshall", Warner Brothers Productions "The Big Bounce", filmed on the North Shore, providing vintage photos of Haleiwa and surfing for background artwork.  He is currently represented by Getty Images (an international stock agency based in New York). He now specializes in printing historic and nostalgic images of Hawaii.
Our hand printed silver halide gelatin original photos are very popular and affordable to local people and tourists visitin Hawaii, as well as people who have never visited Hawaii.
We're proud to mention that many of our photos wereg used as background artwork in the new CBS television network series "Magnum P.I." , & "Hawaii 5-0".
The photos are the 'old style' traditional film based images printed using an enlarger from a negative on real photographic paper and archivally processed by hand, not by a machine. Prices are less than you would pay retail at a gallery or custom photo lab for a hand printed and mounted silver halide black and white print and production costs are lower than most folks so we want to offer affordable quality art for people who might not otherwise be able to afford it.

    PLEASE NOTE
: Prints like this are usually purchased by hotels, restaurants, interior design, and movie production companies where the prints are displayed in large rooms and are viewed from 10 to 100 feet away. They look very impressive wherever they may be displayed. This hand signed photo when mounted and framed nicely, retails for much more (0-500+) at galleries in Hawaii. It would make an excellent, affordable, treasured, and unique birthday or holiday gift for some special person in your life! ***Please note that the contrast and brightness may vary slightly depending on your individual computer screen settings and
because it is from a 35mm original film it will appear to be a little grainy or not super sharp very close up because it enlarged from film much larger than what you see here.
It will look sharper a few feet away and will look more like the the sample print you see here. When first evaluating the image, we recommend that the viewer step back about five to ten feet to get the maximum visual impact.
Prints are shipped unmounted, rolled up in a strong shipping tube. **We want to make sure you know exactly what you are buying so we hope our thorough description of these photos will answer all your questions before you purchase.
