Description
Here is an original1940 Theocratic Convention of Jehovah's Witnesses Invitation
held on July 24 - 28 1940 and published by Watchtower. The Title of Brother J. F. Rutherford's Public Address was
Religion As A World Remedy
. In the background you can see airplanes in the sky and a city burning apparently from being bombarded. The back of the page has a lot of interesting details about the Convention itself. This single page invitation has some moving artwork on it and is a valuable piece of Theocratic history!
Here is a little of what has been written about this historic convention:
1960 Watchtower 3/15 p. 189 Pursuing My Purpose in Life
The big national convention in Detroit, Michigan, in 1940 proved to be a decisive event in the life of our family. I can still picture the six of us, my mother, two brothers, two sisters and myself, seated around the kitchen table making a resolution never to miss an assembly if at all possible to attend, and to enter the pioneer service as soon as we could, even one by one.
1960 Watchtower 7/15 p. 429 Pursuing My Purpose in Life
Soon after that I received a letter from the Watch Tower Society saying that the convention had been changed to Detroit, Michigan, and asking the help of pioneers in the area for preconvention work. Detroit is only a hundred miles from my home town, Saginaw, Michigan; so I decided to go, although I had but two dollars in my pocket. Five other pioneers went with me. We had a good time looking for rooms, typing room assignments and cleaning the assembly place. The convention was wonderful, and I am grateful that I had a small share in helping to prepare for it and was able to attend.
1983 Watchtower 9/1 p. 13 Moving Ahead With God’s Organization
That summer of 1940 Brother Rutherford was sick, and we did not know whether he would be able to attend the convention arranged in Detroit, Michigan. He attended, but during his public talk he had a message delivered to me saying that he would be returning immediately to Bethel and for me to make arrangements for this.
1996 Watchtower 4/1 p. 24 “Work, Not for the Food That Perishes”
Afterward I worked in a number of departments, including the one where we made phonographs. We used these machines to play recorded Bible messages at the doorsteps of householders. A vertical phonograph was designed and produced by volunteers in our department. This phonograph not only played prerecorded messages but also had special compartments for carrying booklets and perhaps a sandwich. I had the privilege of demonstrating the use of this new equipment at a convention in Detroit, Michigan, in 1940.
