    Description

This is a fair quality (from a pretty old grainy film photo) hand printed silver halide photograph, (not a digital inkjet print) custom printed in a darkroom from a copy negative from the original, archivally developed in chemistry on Ilford 'Pearl' surface semi-matte surface black & white photographic paper,
cropped to fit and mounted on a single black 8x10 inch backing board **which is included as part of the print that you can see here (see photo)
shrinkwrapped, with caption and photography information on the back of the Outrigger Canoe Club beach, 1905? Waikiki, Oahu, Hawaii. It is the home of the first and oldest surfing and canoe club in the world, this is where organized surfing became popular and recognized all over the world. Note the 'short' alaia boards. Maybe these guys were 'rippers'.
It would make a great gift for someone who likes surfing, early Waikiki, or historic images of Hawaii. They are popular reasonably priced decorations for restaurants, offices, homes, or stores where people can see them.
The ancient and very spiritual sport of surfing started in Hawaii and there are indications that it may be more than several hundred years old. There are many old stories about ancient Hawaiian royalty and commoners surfing longer than Hawaiian history records. Captain Cooke in the 1700's mentioned surfing in his logs. The original surfboards were basically heavy, flat, wooden planks, 6-16+ feet in length, 5-10 inches in thickness, that were hand carved from logs and treated with oils and varnishes to make them waterproof. They were bulky and awkward to ride compared to modern boards. There were two kinds of surfboards in early Hawaiian times, an 'Olo' ( the longer heavy boards mostly rode by the chiefs and noblemen) and a 'Alaia' (the shorter boards rode by the commoners). In ancient times most of the better surf breaks were reserved for royalty. To be an accomplished surfer was a goal of many Alii and royalty which gained them more recognition and status in the society. Its likely that commoners who were excellent surfers were allowed to surf with royalty and gained a higher position in the society.

    PLEASE ALSO NOTE:
e-Bay's transfer process and the computer screen makes the photo look contrasty and slightly darker or lighter, depending on your monitor brightness and contrast settings. This photo is printed on non-glossy semi-matte 'pearl' surface paper. The photo offered has more gray tones, deep, richer blacks, less contrast, and has the unique grainier look of a real silver halide gelatin print, which has a different tonal range and brightness than you may see on your individual computer screen. Please be aware of this. You may be able to see small imperfections on larger images as these are printed by hand 'as is' and are not retouched. We do, however, try to crop and correct them so they look best. It is printed on 8x10 inch paper from a copy negative, and may be trimmed to a slightly smaller size because of the format. **When it is attached to the single mat 8x10"backing board you will be able to see the backing board around the borders of the print. It makes the print look like there is a margin around the photo which you can see here. An 11x14 inch frame (or larger) with a custom cut mat from a frame shop or art store is the suggested way to display this photo.
Prints are permanently mounted to the acid free backing board using an archival photo adhesive and cannot be easily removed from the backing board without damaging the photo. If you want to use a larger frame and can't figure out how to do it with the photo mounted on the backing board, contact us and we can explain how it can be done. This is recommended for suggested visual and artistic impact in displaying this photo, although many people are happy using a standard 8x10 inch frame and displaying the image as is.
