    Serial Number 2. 1875 A Mountain Gun Style Cannon in 85mm - the hardened steel barrel shot both artillery and ball and is right turn rifled. Breech loading, few examples of this early large caliber Mountain gun exist. By 1893 the caliber was scaled to 75mm. Oak and Steel Wheels, Steel carriage. Pins detach for easy dismantling. The hardened steel canon barrel consists of the state of the art hardening processes Krupp developed through the Bessemer process and Open hearth furnace metallurgy developed by the Krupp company during this time at the beginning of the worldwide use of steel made affordable because of the Bessemer process. This new hardened steel was adopted by the British for all their rifles. Later examples of this mountain gun can be seen in 1the 1893 and 1905 Mountain Guns. No example this early has been offered at auction in recent history. The Howitzer was purchased from Eurasia Antiques in Los Gatos California who acquired it from The Milwaukee Pubic Museum Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and includes the shipping label from the Museum to Eurasia Antiques. Then the Cannon was acquired by the Private William Rolland Museum, Newbery Park, California where it has been on display in the second story. 33" diameter wheels, 39" barrel, 70" carriage, and approx 36" wide lug to lug.
