    Description

Reynolds Argenta Nickel-Silver Intermediate Trombone Ser#61283 Rare Vintage Horn Needs Adjustment
    Additional Info:
This is a pretty rare find!  It is a slightly larger bore tenor trombone that is all nickel silver finish.  It has an 8 1/2" bell which gives it a bigger broader sound!  Overall the instrument is in really nice condition.  At the slide tip crook there is a crack that does have a slight leak. The inner slides are out of alignment and will need to be adjusted as well as the hand brace needs a re-solder.  The slide and the bell have their matching serial numbers.  Currently the instrument can play but you would want to get the adjustments done before the instrument would truly be in good playing condition.  This is a beautiful vintage horn and something you don't see very often.
    Instrument Condition:
The overall physical condition of this used instrument is Good
    Dents:
    Some dents and dings
    Playing Condition:
This instrument is currently in playing condition but it needs adjustments to be in top playing condition.
    The Finish:
It has approximately 75-80% of the nickel-silver finish
    Player Wear:
Light to Medium general wear (visible surface scratches and wear and/or small-medium dents and dings)
    Tuning slide Condition:
    The tuning slide is stuck.
    Slide Condition:
Medium general wear (moves but catches through 1st and 2nd positions with visible surface scratches on the outside slide sleeves) The inner slides are needing to be re-aligned so the further in you draw the slide the more resistance you have. The hand brace for the slide needs to be re-soldered.
    Metal Condition:
There is a hairline crack on the inside of the bottom of the crook of the slide (see pics).
    Tuning Slide Bow Condition:
Light general wear (possible light surface scratches and/or minor dents and dings)
    Slide Tip (Crook) Bow Condition:
Medium general wear (visible surface scratches and wear and/or small-medium dents and dings) there is a hairline crack on the inside of the bottom of the crook of the slide.
    The Bell:
Minor dents and dings and minor bell edge damage (See Pics)
    Bell Dent Removal/Repair:
    No evidence
    Re-soldered:
The hand brace for the slide needs to be re-soldered (see pics).
    Bell Diameter Approximately:
    8 1/2 inches
    The Mouthpiece:
No Mouthpiece is included, or other accessories.  Our large bore mouthpiece did not fit.  It took our standard mouthpiece and just fit really high up on the shank as it is a larger bore but not a true large bore. An online search suggested the bore size to be a larger-bore (.520″)
    The Stand:
    If pictured, not included.
    The Case:
Older Used Condition (Still usable but significant signs of physical wear) with tape and tape residue on it.
    Engraving:
Reynolds Argenta -Cleveland, O.- (on the bell with RMC with music lyre above it)
Additional Information found in a Search from contemporacorner:
Introduced in 1959, the Argenta model is a larger-bore (.520″) tenor trombone made of solid nickel-silver. Models made after 1964 are lighter weight in construction and sound than the original Cleveland horns. Bell and slide sections from the different manufacturing plants do not fit perfectly together and the slide lengths and widths are slightly different as well. The Argenta model was discontinued c.1973 and its place in the Reynolds catalog was taken by the nickel-plated Onyx trombone. The Argenta line of horns were some of very few band instruments, other than French horns, made completely of solid nickel silver. According to Reynolds’ trademark application, the name “Argenta” was taken from the Spanish word for “silver” even though, despite its close appearance, there is no actual silver in nickel silver. Nickel silver, also known as German silver or neusilber, is an alloy of copper, zinc and nickel. A representative alloy mix contains 65% copper, 17% zinc and 18% nickel (compared to 80% copper and 20% zinc for standard yellow brass). Nickel silver has similar characteristics to brass, but is harder and stiffer, making it a durable alternative often used on high-wear areas of a horn, including valve casings, hand grips, tuning slides and trim.  Instruments made of solid nickel silver tend to have a darker, clearer tone compared to standard brass alloys. Nickel silver emphasizes the lower and higher overtone series, resulting in a sound that resonates very clearly in the corresponding registers. Nickel silver horns also tend to project more dramatically than other brass alloys.
