Description
This is a quality 8x10 inch hand printed original silver halide gelatin print cropped, and mounted on a single 8x10" single backing board of Hawaii longboard surfer Ivan Trent ‘dropping in’ on a 20 foot+ wave at Waimea Bay, by longtime Hawaii professional surfing photographer Bill Romerhaus, cropped, and mounted on an 8x10" black mat board which is part of the print as you can see here.
Trent commented, "That Board I was riding was my 12'0'' WRV Frierson gun...a little too much length but a good board. That year I was on a recruiting trip for the Teams." Trent, then a U.S. Navy Seal “Team" member and now trainer, has been surfing Waimea since 1986 and is the son of famous 60's big wave surfer Buzzy Trent who passed away at the age of 77 in Honolulu, 2006.
Buzzy was a pioneer in big wave surfing, boxed, and fought bulls in
Tijuana before gaining fame as a legendary big wave surfer. He was one of the top young surfers in California and came to Hawaii in 1953 to surf big waves at Makaha and gained international fame when Honolulu photographer Scoop Suzuki photographed him, Woody Brown, and George Downing riding a 20 foot wave, and was published in newspapers around the globe. Buzzy’s fame continued when he surfed the biggest day ever ridden at Makaha January 12, 1958 when the waves were 20-40 feet+ and always went for the biggest, gnarliest waves, and was an incredible waterman. This photo of his son Ivan, which continues the family tradition, appeared in a Navy newspaper, circa 1995 and is a friend of the photographer. Waimea Bay is home of the Eddie Aikau Memorial Big Wave Surfing Contest, and some of the largest rideable waves in the world. This photo was also published in several surfing magazines.
This would make a great gift for someone who surfed the bay, knows Ivan,
or his father
,
or likes historic big wave surf photos. They are popular reasonably priced decorations for restaurants, offices, homes, or stores where people can see them.
Waimea waves are some of the most powerful on earth, generated by far distant North Pacific Ocean storms during the winter months (Sept-March). They are an incredible example of the ocean's mightiness. This 40 foot high wave is breaking in water only about 15 feet deep. It has been said that one wave this size if harnessed for energy could provide enough electrical power to light a thousand homes for over an hour. Native Hawaiians, surfers, and a lot of oriental people consider these magnificent waves to be a supreme example of power and manifested with the spirit of mother nature. To actually see these waves breaking along the shoreline is an awesome, humbling, and unforgettable experience. In the near future real black and white silver halide photographic paper will cease to be available as manufacturers phase out production because of digital photography and we won't be printing these by hand in the darkroom forever.
Our hand printed silver halide gelatin original photos are very popular and affordable to local people and tourists visiting Hawaii, as well as people who have never visited Hawaii.
We're proud to mention that many of our photos were used as background artwork in the new CBS television network series "Hawaii 5-0".
Prices are less than you would pay retail at a gallery or custom photo lab for a hand printed and mounted silver halide black and white print and production costs are lower than most folks so we want to offer affordable quality art for people who might not otherwise be able to afford it. Larger unmounted prints are also available, please inquire.

PLEASE ALSO NOTE
:
e-Bay's transfer process and the computer screen makes the photo look contrasty and slightly darker or lighter, depending on your monitor brightness and contrast settings. This photo is printed on non-glossy semi-matte 'pearl' surface paper and the photo offered has more gray tones, deep, richer blacks, less contrast, and has the unique look of a real silver halide gelatin print, which has a different tonal range and brightness than you may see on your individual computer screen. It was taken on film, not digital, so it will look grainier and not as sharp as many computer type prints. We do however try to crop and correct them so they look best. It is printed on 8x10 inch paper from an original negative and margins may be slightly trimmed.
**When it is cropped and attached to the single mat 8x10" backing board you will be able to see the black backing board around the borders of the print. It makes the print look like there is a narrow margin around the edges of the photo which you can see here.
Prints are permanently mounted to the acid free backing board using archival photo adhesive and cannot easily be removed from the backing board without damaging the photo. An 11x14 inch frame (or larger) with a custom cut mat from a frame shop or art store is the suggested way to display this photo. If you want to use a larger frame and mat and you can't find an experienced framer who knows how to do it, contact us and we can provide information explaining how it can be done. This is recommended for best visual and artistic impact in displaying this photo, although many people are happy using a standard 8x10" frame and displaying the image as is.
